Last week, the boys travelled up to Kirk Michael to take part in the Western District Tournament. It was a very well organised and fun afternoon, which we all really enjoyed. Marown took two teams to the event, named by the boys as AC Marown and Inter Marown.
Our first game of the tournament saw our two teams play each other! It was a great way to start and we all know each other’s play well. AC Marown won the game 5-0 with Josh C scoring a hat trick and Sam also scoring 2.
Inter Marown went on to play four other games. They played really well as a team and their persistence and resilience were fantastic. The had some hard fought games and William scored a couple of well executed goals. Their game against Peel Celts was played superbly and although they lost 1-2, Theo’s shot towards the end of the game deflected off the post and they were very unlucky not to take a draw from that game. Well played boys! They all learnt a lot from the afternoon and their effort was to be commended.
AC Marown had a very successful group stage of the tournament. Following their win in the first game, they played Peel Vikings. Josh C scored two early goals with Sam pouncing on a super shot of Freddie’s to make it 3-0. Freddie then claimed a goal for 4-0 and despite Peel scoring late on the boys showed a great display of teamwork to win 4-1.
Peel Celts game next for AC Marown and this was a tight, well contested game. Sam opened the scoring with Peel equalising soon after. AC Marown then took control of the game and through some great linked up play Sam B and Josh helped to secure the win for 3-1. A performance to be proud of!
AC Marown continued to build on their form with a 9-0 win over St John’s Sharks. It was a brilliant team performance as the boys found their rhythm to talk to each other, link up their play, rely on each other, fill in for each other and become a real team! The goals came from every outfield player that was on the pitch with Jack T scoring 1, Freddie scoring 2 and Josh C and Sam both scoring a hat trick! Well played AC Marown!
The game against Bunscoill A and was a very tense game. Both teams were in great form and hoping to progress in the tournament. Sam scored the only goal of the game and all of the boys defended well to protect the scoreline. Josh T was exceptional in goals with the support of his team in front of him.
A semi-final against the hosts Michael Galaxy awaited and this was an excellent game of football. Both teams played superbly and were evenly matched. Michael defended brilliantly to keep our goalscorers out of any danger zones and at full time the game remained 0-0. We headed into extra time and with about 1 minute to play Michael found a way through with a great strike into our net. We had 40 seconds to find an equaliser and despite Sam B chasing the ball from way out of play several times, we couldn’t find a way through. The home crowd cheered Michael through to their final against Ballaugh. AC Marown worked so hard all afternoon and deserved their success. They settled into the games, understood and used their tactics effectively, played creatively, showed resilience, reflected on each performance and supported each other consistently. Wow!
Michael Galaxy went on to win the tournament, 1-0 against Ballaugh in a very similar game. Congratulations to them and we extend our thanks for a well organised and enjoyable afternoon to all the children and staff at Michael School and all of the other competing schools. Further thanks to the families and friends that made the trip up to support us and to Mrs Pickering for help transporting us there and back.
Both our teams should feel very proud of themselves and they have already commented on how much they have improved and how proud they are of what they have accomplished. The teamwork and effort was outstanding and they are ready for any challenge!
